Economic Development

Since the inception of MainStreet in 1994, downtown business people and
building owners have invested more than $75,000 in facade improvements and over
$1.5 million in building rehabilitations, new construction or public
improvements.
Finally, MainStreet is solidly focused on the future and promise of economic
expansion. By preserving our past we are able to capitalize on our strengths.
Downtown street-level occupancy is a very healthy 95%. MainStreet maintains a
database on the infrastructure and building inventory of downtown. We have also
partnered with the University of Nebraska to perform a Consumer Preference and
Economic Leakage Study. We sponsor seminars on the affects of the new census,
specialists in economic trends and the future of electronic commerce, so our
businesses, while thriving from preservation of the past, ensure an economically
stable future.
Today, Fremont's downtown has the kind of charm and distinction that attracts
out of town shoppers as well as local residents. Downtown hosts annual events
like John C. Fremont Days, a Farmers Market and an Old Fashioned Christmas
Parade. Downtown Fremont is known as the Antique Capital of Eastern Nebraska.
The antique stores benefit downtown as a whole and they create shopping appeal.
Downtown Fremont also offers great diversity. The retail mix includes everything
from men, women's and children's apparel to dining, gifts and specialty, sports
and hardware stores and gourmet coffee shops.
Whether you're a consumer or a retail or service business, downtown Fremont
is truly a great place to do business!
